Grandma Stella Egg: Scandinavian Resilience and the Heart of the Hodge Ranch

Welcome to the Egg Family News! Today, we look back to honor the enduring legacy and quiet strength of our paternal grandmother, Stella Egg (August 7, 1918 – 1995).

Stella was a true force of nature—a quietly powerful matriarch who taught us the meaning of endurance, work ethic, and unconditional, tough love. Her life was defined by an iron-clad determination that refused to bow to physical limits.

Swedish Roots and the Adrenaline Engine

Born to Andrew Iverson, a resilient Swedish immigrant who lived into his nineties, and Hannah Pehrson, Stella carried a deep-seated Scandinavian grit. This heritage was tested early on. She was a primary carrier of hereditary hemolytic spherocytosis, a Scandinavian blood disorder that caused severely deformed red blood cells, chronic anemia, and painful spleen enlargement.

Possessing a lifelong horror of surgery, Stella completely rejected medical operations. Instead, she endured the chronic pain and fatigue by running purely on adrenaline. Her physical trials only mounted over time, but her refusal to complain or seek the easy path set a lifelong standard for everyone who knew her.

The Translocation to Hodge (1974)

In the early 1970s, Stella faced the sudden, tragic loss of her husband, Theron John Egg, who passed away from a brain aneurysm. Recently widowed and hospitalized in Seattle with five distinct spinal fractures caused by severe osteoporosis, she faced a long road to recovery.

Yet, as soon as she healed, she packed her things and traveled to Hodge, California, to live with our family on the nine-acre Egg Ranch.

To the medical world, Stella was technically classified as disabled. To our family, she was the undisputed operational engine of the homestead. For over twenty years, she lived in the detached two-bedroom guest house behind the main residence. Despite her broken back, she quietly performed the vast bulk of the laundry, shelled mountains of green peas for canning, and washed the dishes daily for our bustling family of nine children. Her personal domain was always kept in immaculate, perfect order.

Six O'Clock Sundays: The Tidy Recliner

While Stella worked tirelessly under the radar during the week, Sunday evenings belonged to her. Every Sunday at 6:00 PM (and of course other weeknights, too!), her living room became our family sanctuary. All the grandchildren would gather on her clean floor, grab throw pillows, and crowd around the television to watch The Wonderful World of Disney, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, Emergency, and CHiPs.

She was a practitioner of exceptionally tough love. She was wonderfully affectionate but held us to high standards of order and respect. She was the absolute first to set firm boundaries or issue a swift, corrective swat if a grandchild stepped out of line—a loving, orderly style that we proudly see mirrored in Kristy's grandmother style today.

The Beautiful Hand-Written Ledger

Stella lived a life of immense depth, yet she felt no need to boast or over-explain her journey. In her lifetime, she kept only a single physical diary, entering her thoughts sparingly a few times a year. Ben Egg noted that while the pages are mostly unfilled, they are written in the most beautiful handwriting in the world.

She let her daily actions, her unceasing labor, and her devotion to her family speak for themselves. On her birthday week, we honor her memory and strive to carry forward her quiet strength, Scandinavian resilience, and devotion to home.

Let us continue to stay the course, protect our family anchors, and take care of one another.

Theron Jay Egg, Sr - Happy Father's Day

Jan 2. 2026

14 years ago, Dad went home.

An updated tribute for our late dad (and our sweet and vibrant mom) https://bit.ly/TheronEgg2022

Mom & Dad (Circa June 1963)

HOW IS IT THAT I'M 62 YEARS OLD this year, and I’m still just beginning to realize just how amazing my dad is?

My heart is filled with reverence for the labors and example of my dad. I revere him.  Memories of his example are etched deep into the fabric of my very being.  Any goodness in me can be traced back to his teachings and example.

I realize more all the time the impact of seemingly simple experiences with my dad that have impacted me.  One comes to memory from the fall of 1980.

Jay Egg Heading Out For a Date in the 1964 Dodge
I had a date with Susan Canazoles, and dad told me that I could take the 1964 Dodge Station Wagon. It had a push button transmission and no seat belts. People weren’t really taking the seat belt law serious anyway back in 1980.

I’m sure the date went well, and I returned home a little later than I had promised.  I seem to remember being pleased that it was not quite midnight when I walked into the well-lit (meaning dad was waiting up) living room of our ranch style home outside Barstow, Ca. I could see dad sitting back looking calm and content, even before the music registered in my ears.

Dad Was Playing "Van Halen" When I Came Home
“Van-Halen II” was playing on the brand new home stereo that dad had just purchased and set up.  Registering all of this in my mind, I grabbed the other recliner and enjoyed the lead guitar solo, pleased that my father was enjoying some of “my” music.  I wasn’t fooled for a minute. I knew this was his way of bonding, and I loved it. He listened to the entire album that night with me. We talked about the band’s impressive skills and the stories behind some of the songs; sometimes they were my stories and memories relating to the music. This was all about me, and I loved it. I remember it as an ever present experience, even closer than breathing; like he’s here right now.

Is it any wonder that I never complained once as I drove my kids to seminary and listened to hundreds of hours of the newest releases of their favorite music? What is amazing is that until this moment, I thought that I was pretty amazing for doing that with my kids. Pretty silly huh? …just when I think I’m “all-that”, I remember that my dad did it first. Chalk another one up for dad.  Oh, how I love him.

He’s with Father in Heaven now, which means that I have two “Fathers in Heaven”.  Their influence and imprint on what I have become is sweet and rich. No wonder, that Father in Heaven wants us “boys” to experience fatherhood. We begin to understand why it is that He (God, our Father) is so amazing as we pass our love forward to our families.

It’s times like these that I begin to understand the plan of happiness for us here.  I want to pass it forward with all my heart.  I want my family, and all with whom I come into contact to know what remarkable fathers I have.

*The meaning of Theron is 'hunter'. It is a gender-neutral name and is of Greek origin. The name derives from the Greek word 'therao', meaning 'to hunt'

I'd like to share a little about my late Father, Theron Jay Egg, Sr.

His grandson and namesake, Theron Egg III is on a mission.  His Cousin (my sister Carolyn's Son), Hunter Gonzales, is serving in Chile.  Did you know that "Theron" is greek for "Hunter"*? Hmmm. Coincidence?  I think not!

I've seen much of dad's characteristics in the younger Theron and other grandchildren; it's remarkable, and a wonderful way to remember Theron Jay Egg, Sr, who would be turning 89 later this month today - Read on...
